Our wealth management services encompass financial planning and investment management for clients on an ongoing basis. We meet with wealth management clients as needed; however, we like to meet at least twice a year. These regular progress meetings provide an opportunity to discuss changes to client goals, resources and risk tolerances; review the client’s progress toward specific goals; and uncover and discuss new planning opportunities.
These regular progress meetings are very valuable. Without them, we often learn of planning opportunities after our window for taking advantage of them has closed. For example, if a client tells us during the year that their income is lower than normal, we may be able to recommend a Roth IRA conversion, additional IRA distributions or harvesting capital gains at a lower capital gains tax rate. If we learn about the client’s decreased income too late after the fact, the window to take advantage of these types of planning opportunities will have closed. The information uncovered at regular progress meetings is factored into client portfolios and periodic financial plan updates.
Occasionally, we will work with clients that need financial planning assistance of a more limited scope. For those clients, we offer financial planning services without investment management. Financial planning services typically involves the analysis of one or two specific issues. In addition to being more limited in scope, planning-only engagements also are typically completed within a limited period of time.
